Two weeks short course on “Remote Sensing and GIS Applications in Geoscience” was conducted by the Geoscience Division (GSD), NESAC from January 29 – February 09, 2024, at the NESAC Outreach Facility. A total of 14 participants from different parts of the country attended the course, which included Government Officials, Faculties from colleges and universities, Research Scholars and postgraduate students. The inaugural programme of the course was held on January 29, 2024 at NESAC outreach conference hall. Dr Jonali Goswami, Programme Coordinator, NESAC Outreach welcomed the participants and Shri M. Somorjit Singh, Course Director provided the course outline to the participants. Dr. K. K. Sarma, Group Head, Remote Sensing and Application Group (RSAG) delivered the inaugural addressed to the participants. The training covered the basics of Remote Sensing, Geographic Information System (GIS), Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and their applications in Geology.
The training also included demonstration on ISRO’s Bhoonidhi portal for ordering/downloading satellite data and covered advanced applications like Hyperstractal Remote Sensing in Geology, Microwave remote sensing for deformation study, GNSS applications in Earthquake precursors, remote sensing inputs for landslide inventory and susceptibility, Groundwater prospect mapping, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) applications in Geology etc.
Renouned scientists Prof. Y S Roa (IIT Bombay) and Dr. George Philip (Former Scientist, Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology) were invited for delivering lectures and handson on advanced topics such as Microwave Remote Sensing and Integration of Geospatial and Geophysical Techniques for Tectonic Landform. Dr Ningthoujam Surdas Singh, Senior Geologist, GSI, Shillong was invited to conduct a one day Geological Field training in and around Cherrapunji as part of the course schedule.
The valedictory programme was held on February 09, 2024. Dr K.K Sarma, Group Head (RSAG) addressed the participants and congratulated all the participants on the successful completion of the course after distributing the course certificate.
