National Remote Sensing Day is celebrated every year on 12th August to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, who is considered as the Father of India’s Space Program. Indian Society of Remote Sensing (ISRS), Shillong Chapter, jointly with Department of Geography, St. Edmund’s College, Shillong, Indian Society of Geomatics (ISG)-Shillong Chapter & Indian Meteorological Society (IMS)-Shillong Chapter celebrated the event on 8th August, 2025 at St. Edmund’s College, Shillong. The theme for this year’s National Remote Sensing Day was “Celebrating innovation for a better future”. The inaugural session commenced with a warm welcome address by Dr. D. Chutia, Secretary, ISRS Shillong Chapter, followed by opening remarks from Dr. K. K. Sarma, Vice President of ISRS Shillong Chapter. Prof. Sunil Kumar De, President, ISRS Shillong Chapter, delivered a brief address on the occasion. The program was graced by Br. Sunil Britto, Principal, St. Edmund’s College, as the Guest of Honour. Dr. S. P. Aggarwal, Director, NESAC and President, ISRS, graced the event as the Chief Guest. In his address, he recalled Dr. Vikram Sarabhai’s pioneering contributions and India’s space journey—exemplified by missions such as NISAR—and urged students to learn remote sensing and space technology and make use of India’s satellite-driven resources.
As part of the programme, a technical session comprising three invited talks, followed by a quiz competition, was organized to encourage active participation and spark interest in space science and technology. About 200 students and accompanying faculties from leading colleges in Shillong viz., St. Edmund’s College, St. Anthony’s College, Union Christian College (UCC), Umiam, Synod College St. Mary’s College etc. have actively participated in the event to make the program a grand success.
