NESAC organized a one-week training programme on “UAV Remote Sensing and Applications” for officials of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) from December 1 to 5, 2025 at the NESAC Outreach Facility, Umiam. A total of fourteen participants from BSF, SSB and ITBP attended the programme. The training was designed to enhance the operational and technical capabilities of CAPF personnel in the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles for surveillance, mapping, situational monitoring and decision support in challenging field environments.
During the course, participants were introduced to the fundamentals of UAV-based Remote Sensing, the principles of Geographic Information Systems, mission planning strategies, UAV flight operations and the complete workflow of data acquisition and processing. The sessions also covered advanced photogrammetric techniques such as point cloud generation, DEM and orthomosaic creation, and 3D reconstruction. Participants were further exposed to the applications of multispectral, hyperspectral and LiDAR sensors in UAV platforms, as well as the emerging role of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in UAV analytics. Practical exercises, hands-on data processing sessions and an introduction to QGIS enriched the learning experience, while a visit to NESAC’s laboratories provided valuable exposure to operational tools and processing facilities. The programme was facilitated by Dr. Victor Saikhom, Course Director & Scientist-SF, GID, with coordination support from Shri Sanjay Pandit, Course Officer & Scientist-SD, SUD. Subject experts from GID, SUD and ASD delivered lectures, demonstrations and practical sessions.

The valedictory session was chaired by Dr. SP Aggarwal, Director, NESAC, and attended by Shri Ramani Kumar Das, Head-SUD.
