Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences and Minister of State for the Prime Minister’s Office, Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, visited the North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC), Umiam, on 14 July 2026.
Dr. SP Aggarwal, Director, NESAC received the Hon’ble UnionMinister at Shillong airport before formal welcome at NESAC premises. Director, NESAC, made a comprehensive presentation highlighting the Centre’s major activities, achievements and ongoing programmes in the application of space technology for the development of the North Eastern Region (NER). Hehighlighted on 50 recently completed and 78 ongoing projects, in the area of space technology applicationsin agriculture, forestry, water resources, geosciences, urban& regional planning, geoinformatics & IT, Satellite communication & UAV,space & atmospheric sciences, disaster management support and outreach & capacity building activities.
The Hon’ble Minister also advised NESAC to collaborate with the North East Cane and Bamboo Development Centre (NECBDC) and the concerned State agencies to share the findings of ongoing bamboo mapping related activities for enhancing the bamboo value chain in the region.

The Hon’ble Minister suggested enhancing the specificity of accuracy of NESAC’s flood early warning system for effective flood mitigation. Additionally, he also suggested to work with state agencies for effective implementation ofwater harvesting structure such as the one implemented in Ram Krishna Mission, Cherrapunjee. The Hon’ble Minister emphasised the need to accord greater priority to space based support in monitoring of international border areas. Hon’ble Minister also recommended to ensure greater participation of the private tourism sector while developing the GeoTourism (ManzilNE) dashboard.
The Hon’ble Minister appreciated the contribution of NESAC in bringing the benefits of space technology closer to the State Governments, departments and communities of the NER. He advised the Centre to further expand its institutional partnerships and formulate a greater collaborative, application-oriented projects involving Central Ministries, State Governments, private industries, entrepreneurs and other stakeholders.
